Takhyung Barwa
The Blazing Wrathful Guru, Hayagrīva and Garuḍa (Lama Drakpo Takhyung Barwa) are the wrathful male deities of the Longchen Nyingtik. The practice combines the deities of Hayagrīva, Garuḍa and Guru Drakpo and is especially powerful for subjugating negative forces and overcoming diseases.
It was revealed by the great tertön Jigme Lingpa at the age of 65 in 1795. When Jigme Lingpa himself had fallen ill and there were dangers to his life, the blessing of this practice removed all obstacles. The root treasure says:
Jigme Lingpa had written a personal letter to Queen Tsewang Lhamo of Derge that explained the history of the Kīla of Lightning-Forged Meteoric Iron which Jigme Lingpa had revealed as a material treasure at Mount Hepori called The History of the Kīla of Lightning-Forged Meteoric Iron, the Material Treasure of the Blazing Hayagrīva and Garuḍa. It was this kīla that was to become the material basis for the revelation of the Takhyung Barwa. In his autobiography, Jigme Lingpa adds that he offered both the kīla and its history to the royalty of Derge as his spiritual inheritance.[1] Jigme Lingpa tells us:
With its powerful blessings to remove obstacles this practice became very popular, which we can infer as well from the numerous liturgies and empowerment manuals that have been composed. Jigme Lingpa himself writes:
In particular, Namkha Tsewang Chokdrup, one of the thirteen disciples of the First Dodrupchen Jigme Trinle Özer named Dorje (or Namkha), became very proficient in the practice and subsequently wrote several texts for the cycle, such as a lineage prayer, a liturgy and a long commentary. In the colophon of the liturgy that Namkha Tsewang Chokdrup compiled, The Blazing Majesty of Blessings, he writes that he was entrusted and taken care for by the omniscient Jigme Lingpa himself, and that he had ‘attained some slight signs of the blessing of this special deity’ himself. Notwithstanding his own humility about his realization, it is said that Jigme Lingpa commented that Tsewang Chokdrup's attainment was not less than his own, and he recommended that his own followers seek his guidance in their practice.
Besides the root text, other texts by Jigme Lingpa himself are the Essential Instruction for the Empowerment and the Recitation Manual and Liberating Evil Nāgas. The practice has been arranged into a liturgy by Namkha Tsewang Chokdrup, Adzom Gyalse Gyurme Dorje and Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Tayé. In recent times, both Chatral Rinpoche and Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche have written concise versions for daily use.
Several commentaries have been written, firstly by Namkha Tsewang Chokdrup, Adzom Gyalse Gyurme Dorje and Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima. In later times Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche made many clarifications on the text by Jigme Tenpe Nyima, called The Precious Lamp, in a commentary that goes by the same name.
Tantric text warning
